Lymphedema Skin care

Caring for your skin when you are at risk of developing lymphedema or when you have lymphedema is essential.

Why is skin care important:
Your skin is the first line of defense against harmful microorganisms. Any small break in your skin can thus provide a port of entry for infection. In the presence of an infection, your lymphatic system may further become overwhelmed and damaged, thus worsening your lymphedema symptoms or triggering the onset of lymphedema if you are at risk. The above are some ways that you can reduce your risk of infection and injury.

What to do if you get a cut or scratch?
1. Wash with soap and water as soon as you can.
2. Apply an over-the-counter antibiotic ointment.
3. Keep the area clean and dry until it heals.
4. Monitor for signs of infection: redness, swelling, heat, tenderness and/or fever.
5. Contact your healthcare team if you suspect that you have an infection or cellulitis.

It is important to be aware of the signs & symptoms of cellulitis. Cellulitis is a serious bacterial skin infection that presents as a sudden, SPREADING rash that is red and warm. Additional symptoms may include tenderness, swelling, fever and/or flu-like symptoms. Cellulitis requires immediate medical attention! If you suspect that you have cellulitis, then see your doctor right away or visit the nearest emergency room to receive a prompt antibiotic treatment.

If you are concerned about your risk of injury or infection, do not hesitate to speak with your healthcare team.
